Growth in the Process

Who is this AWESOME MAN?

My passion for health and fitness developed at a young age. This passion was channeled into my studies (both theoretical and applied) in the field of kinesiology. My career as a fitness professional started in 2006, and in 2012 I was conferred a B.S. in kinesiology. I completed my masters with a concentration in biomechanics at George Mason University in 2014. I am currently a PhD candidate, in the process of defending my dissertation.

Exercise is medicine. My career objectives include employing evidence-based practices to aid in improving function, reducing likelihood of injury, and attaining peak fitness levels for all individuals.

What type of training do you offer?

My training background is in strength and conditioning, with an emphasis on applying strength training concepts for improving function and the ease of completing daily living activities. My training approach includes the use of various modalities such as: Traditional weight lifting, kettle bell training, boxing, low level plyometrics (agility ladder, hurdles) among others.

How can it benefit me?

My tailored training approach will benefit you by unlocking your potential, complimenting your current regimen. I will accomplish this by addressing the various components of fitness such as: muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance, cardiovascular power, flexibility, and balance among others. With the goal of helping you become the best version of yourself.

what do I need to participate in a training session?

To participate you will need athletic clothing and training shoes

(not running shoes).

To participate in boxing lessons you will need boxing gloves and hand wraps. Information on how to purchase these items will be provided upon request.

Be yourself, bring energy, and watch it matched/exceeded!

ASHTANGA WITH

LAURA RENKES

Who is the SPECTACULAR WOMAN?

“Ashtanga Yoga is a discipline, not a brand,” according to Manju Jois, son of Sri K. Pattahabi Jois, known as the the father of Ashtanga Yoga. It is composed of a progressive sequence of postures linked together with the use of the breath, bandhas, drishti and vinyasas. Pattahabi Jois described it as ‘a breathing exercise…the rest is bending’.

How can it benefit me?

Ashtanga was originally designed to be a healing practice. The doctors in My sore, India sent their patients to Jois when they could not help the patient. Over time, with a consistent and tailored practice, they would recover. One can expect to improve their strength, balance and flexibility, experience a calmness of mind and improved health. The sequence was specifically designed to detoxify or cleanse the body and to strengthen the nervous system. It is as therapeutic or rigorous as you make it.

What do I need in order to participate in class?

All that is needed to practice is a willingness to try and consistency. Many people think they cannot ‘do yoga’ because they are not flexible. You don’t need a flexible body to ‘do yoga,’ just a flexible mind. The person who cannot touch their toes gets just as much benefit out of a posture as the person who can touch their toes, if they put forth equal effort.

On a practical note, you need comfortable clothes that you won’t wrestle with during class and a mat. Straps, blocks and blankets can help but are not necessary. Some basic yoga etiquette relevant for any group class, is to be on time, turn off the electronics and be fragrance free. It’s a good idea to drink plenty of water through-out the day and to not eat a heavy meal several hours before practice.
